3 Kinds of Missionaries

Jesus instructed His disciples, “Go into all the world and preach the Gospel to every person” (Mark 16:15). This verse known as the Great Commission, is not just a recommendation; it is a command to every believer. I think every Christian should be involved in taking the good news to the whole world.

So, how do you obey Christ’s command? I believe there are three ways you can be involved in missions. This simple saying captures the possibilities:

“Go and Say, or Stay and Pray, or help Pay the Way”

Let’s take a look at the three types of missionaries:

1. Foot-missionaries -“How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the Gospel” (Romans 10:15). A foot-missionary is anyone who leaves his or her comfortable home for the purpose of preaching the Gospel, either near at home or in a land far away.

A few days ago I returned home from preaching in Ethiopia. As soon as I landed, I headed to a pastor’s conference. When I arrived, I could not help but notice that all the pastors were wearing shoes that were shiny and beautiful. At first I was embarrassed because my shoes were still covered in mud and dust from the mission field. But, then I remembered this verse and I realized my shoes were covered in “gospel dust.”

The world needs more people who are willing to walk, run, drive, sail, or fly to go tell others about Jesus.

2. Knee-missionaries -“Pray that the Lord of the harvest would send out laborers into His harvest” (Matthew 9:38). A knee-missionary is anyone who spends time on his or her knees praying for people to be saved.

Last year, Jessica and I were preaching in Pakistan. On the final night of the festival, a car full of gunmen chased our car and fired a shot. At the same time, a church in the United States was prompted by God to pray for us. While we were in the midst of a dangerous situation, their prayers helped us escape unharmed. Until we reach heaven, we may never know how important our prayers are.

3. Hand-missionaries -Now you Philippians know also that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church shared with me concerning giving and receiving but you only. For even in Thessalonica you sent aid once and again for my necessities (Philippians 4:16). A hand-missionary is anyone who is willing to reach into his or her pocket and pull out funds to help send a missionary to preach the Gospel.

We believe there is a special anointing for businessmen and women who are called to help finance soul-winning. Our prayer for you is that God would bless everything you put your hands to. Even in the midst of economic recession, God wants to bless you so that you can be a blessing to others.

God has ordained a divine partnership between those who “give” and those who “go.” One cannot exist without the other. As a team we work together to reap an end-time harvest of souls. According to 1 Samuel 30:24, the reward will be the same for both the “givers” and the “goers.”

We are so thankful for you! Your generous giving is what allows us to go to the nations. We feel so privileged to work together with you to rescue people from hell and to lead them to heaven.
