New York, NY with Evangelist Luis Palau

This month, I was invited to observe and participate in a massive evangelistic effort by Evangelist Luis Palau in New York City. Luis Palau is originally from Argentina and is a well-known evangelist in Latin America. God has also given him great fruit here in America. I am a member of the Next Generation Alliance, a group founded by Palau to train and encourage young evangelists.

For the past six months, Palau’s organization has been preparing for City Fest: New York City. They have conducted mini-fests all over New York City and it culminated with a two-day massive outreach. On Friday night, there was an evangelistic gathering in Times Square and on Saturday night there was a Festival in Central Park. Thousands of people made decisions to follow Jesus.

I volunteered to serve as a counselor. At my Gospel Festivals, I ask local church members to serve as counselors, so I figured I should sow a seed by serving as a counselor at another evangelist’s event. When Luis Palau gave the altar call, I saw a woman near me raise her hand to respond to the invitation. Her name was Sofia. She is 45-years-old and was born in a Christian home but had wandered far away from God. She heard the music as she was walking through Times Square and paused to listen. The message captivated her and she decided to rededicate her life to Jesus. As I led her in a salvation prayer, her eyes glistened with tears of joy. She was really impacted by the Gospel.

In Times Square there was a group of performers dressed up in costumes. They make money by taking pictures with tourists. I approached a man dressed in a Super Mario Brothers costume. I found out that his name is David and he is Hispanic. He has been in the United States illegally for thirteen years. In Spanish, I explained the Gospel to him and he decided to make Jesus the Lord of his life.

At the event in Central Park, I prayed with a Chinese family. Two sisters, a husband, and a son all made commitments to follow Christ. The family heard about the Festival through a radio advertisement and they managed to get tickets at the last moment. They asked me to pray for their family members who live in Mainland China to be saved.

Here are some of my thoughts after participating in this evangelistic event:

* I am inspired to dream big dreams. Luis Palau said he has dreamed of doing an evangelistic event in New York City for over fifty years. There is no dream too big for God to bring to pass.

* I am inspired to reach America with the Gospel. This nation needs God just as much as the villages of Africa and Asia. Far too many churches in North America have become anemic in the area of evangelism. It is time for us to do more to preach the Gospel here in America.

* I am inspired to reach big cities with the Gospel. Every two seconds, five more people enter the world than leave it; this adds 3,600 people to the population daily. With this rapid population growth, there is a migration from the village to the metropolis. We need to reach the small towns, but millions of people live in big cities and we need to have a strategy for reaching them.

* I am inspired to believe God for more resources. The total budget for Palau’s outreach in New York City was twelve million dollars. To me, this sum appears to be enormous. Most of our events cost between $10,000-$30,000 and sometimes, despite the generosity of people like you, it is difficult for me to raise even this smaller amount. I am believing God for more resources so I can reach more people for Jesus.

* I am inspired to build a team for evangelism. Palau does not work alone; he has a large team around him that works together for people to be saved. In our ministry, we have seen amazing fruit, but our staff basically consists of me and my wife, and my wife is busy raising our two children. My biggest prayer request is that God would bring several staff members alongside our ministry to help us reach more people for Jesus.

Tandag, Philippines Mission Trip

Thank you for sending us to the Philippines to preach the Gospel. Because of your generosity; pastor’s were encouraged, young people caught the fire of God, and souls were saved. This was our first trip to the Philippines and we loved it.

My wife Jessica is frequently mistaken for a Filipina, a woman from the Philippines. Ever since she was young, random Filipino people come up to her and start talking to her in Tagalog because they think she looks like she is from the Philippines. Jessica always smiles and replies in English, “I’m sorry, I don’t understand you. I’m actually from a Chinese background, but I love the people of the Philippines.” Since she looks like many Filipino people she was instantly accepted and celebrated on this trip.

On this trip we had the privilege of speaking at a youth conference, a pastor’s conference, and a crusade. We were invited by Our God Reigns Ministries which is led by Don and Barbara Arney. They have served God in the Philippines for over twenty-five years. They have a network of churches on the island of Mindanao which is the second largest and southernmost island in the Philippines. About 20.44% of the island’s population is Muslim.

At the youth camp, we were impressed with the passion of the young people for God. They stretched out their arms and cried out for a touch from God. Tears and laughter filled the auditorium as the Holy Spirit began to move. It was so awesome to see their hunger for God. On of our team members, Matthew Triggs (a friend of Jessica’s from Bible school) wrote, “Many of the campers were from remote tribal areas. Every service the altar was packed with about 200 youth as they were saved, transformed, and filled with the Holy Spirit! The Holy Spirit was moving so strongly that teenagers were falling out in the power of God everywhere. It was one of the most refreshing and anointed camps I have been a part of in a long time.”

It reminded me of when I was fourteen years old at a youth camp. I was crying out to God and I had a vision of myself standing on a platform and preaching to people of every color and language. Today, that vision that I had at the age of fourteen has come to pass. From personal experience, I know that the work that God began in the lives of the Filipino youth will continue for many years to come.

The pastor’s conference was a time of refreshing, encouraging, impartation, and training for these front-line shepherds who have dedicated their lives to ministering in out-of-the-way villages in the hardest-to-reach area of the Philippine islands. They are giving their lives for the sake of the Gospel. It was a privilege to spend time with them.

The theme for the conference was Isaiah 60:1, “Arise, shine; For your light has come! And the glory of the Lord is risen upon you.”

Pastor Joe Ohao: I learned things about the life of God, how God use me, how God empowered me for the ministry…[I received] more fire during this conference.

A Crusade meeting was held in Tandag, Surigao del Sur. At the last moment, the mayor of the city moved the location of our crusade and most of the people in the city did not know where to come. Despite the confusion, Daniel and Jessica preached God’s Word with boldness and lives were changed for eternity.

God is Sending Us to the Philippine Islands - Can you help?

We are excited because Jessica and I are both headed to the Philippine islands! My parents are coming home from the mission field for a short while and they volunteered to watch our five-year-old Caleb and our three-year-old Katie Grace for thirteen days so we can go minister together.

We are headed to the island of Mindanao, which is the second largest and southernmost island in the Philippines. About 20.44% of the island’s population is Muslim and most of them live in the southwestern part of Mindanao.

The Muslims in Mindanao are known as the Moros. When the Spanish colonized the Philippine islands back in the 1500’s, they called all Muslims “Moros” after the Islamic Moors who had occupied Spain for many years. Many of the people in the northern Philippine islands converted to Roman Catholicism, but in Mindanao the Muslims have largely remained unreached. For hundreds of years, the Moros have fought unsuccessfully for independence. Because of widespread poverty and religious differences the island has experienced an armed Communist insurgency and extensive displacement of families.

In Mindanao, we will be working with the family of Amy Wilderom (one of our board members) who have ministered in the Philippines for over twenty-five years. Most of their work is focused on five tribal groups: the Mamanwa, the Manobo, the Omayumnum, Dibabawon, and Mandaya. We will be involved in three things:

1. A Crusade meeting in Tandag, Surigao del Sur. Please pray for many people to be saved and healed.

2. A four-day Youth Camp for 300 young people. Please pray for these young people to catch the fire of God and to dedicate their lives to serving Jesus.

3. A four-day pastor’s conference for 150 pastors and their spouses. The theme for the conference is Isaiah 60:1, “Arise, shine; For your light has come! And the glory of the Lord is risen upon you.” The conference will be a time of refreshing, encouraging, impartation, and training for these front-line shepherds who have dedicated their lives to ministering in out-of-the-way villages in the hardest-to-reach area of the Philippine islands.

Can you sponsor a young person or a pastor?

The pastors in this area of the Philippines are very poor so we need your help to cover the cost of their food and housing expenses during the conference. Both the Youth Camp and Leadership Conference will be held at Marihatag Tree Park Resort in Marihatag, Surigao del Sur.

For an investment of $100, you can cover the cost of a pastor and his wife to come to the conference. For an investment of $20, you can sponsor one young person to attend the youth conference.

Here is what is needed to make this a successful outreach:

* Renting a sound system and paying a translator for the mini-crusade in Tandag = $960

* Sponsoring 300 young people at $20 per person for the Youth Conference = $6,000

* Sponsoring 150 pastors and their wives at $100 per couple for the Pastor’s Conference = $15,000.

* Printing books to give to the pastors: $500

What can you do to help us minister to these precious pastors and young people? Could you sponsor two pastors with a gift of $200? Or perhaps you might want to sponsor five young people with a gift of $100? Every gift no matter how large or small would be greatly appreciated! But, we need to hear from you right away because there is a list of pastors who want to know if they will be able to come to the conference. If we are unable to raise enough money, we will be forced to tell some of the pastors that they cannot come. So, we need you to rush the enclosed envelope back to us today.
