Does God do miracles today?

Genet Mudjahadin was married to Muslim man. Her first name means “paradise” but her life was no paradise. For eight years she never had a period. Her husband desperately wanted children but no matter how hard they tried, she was never able to conceive.

Because she was unable to bear children, her husband abused her and told her she was worthless. Finally he divorced her.

In desperation, she gave her life to Jesus. She came to our Gospel Festival because she wanted healing from pain in her back. As we prayed for the sick, suddenly her back was healed. At the same moment, she started to bleed as God gave her a period for the first time in eight years.

She came to the platform crying and praising God for both her miracles. Some people question if miracles are real, but not Genet, she knows God does miracles.

7 Levels of a Missions-Minded Church

Where does your church fit on the scale of missions minded churches? How can your church move up a level?

Level 1: No missions heart. Little exposure to missionaries. Does not support any missionaries or give any platform time to talking about missions.

Level 2: Invites a missionary to speak at least once each year. Sends an occasional offering to missionaries.

Level 3: Has adopted one or more missionaries and supports them on a monthly basis. Talks about the Great Commission from the platform. Exposes people to missions literature through a missions bulletin board, map, or mission table. Pastor may go on an occasional short-term mission trip.

Level 4: One Sunday each month is Mission’s Sunday. Receives a monthly offering for missions. Regularly invites missionaries to share updates by video or in person at church Bible studies and/or on the platform. Provides at least one opportunity for people in the church to go on a short-term mission trip each year.

Level 5: Church has adopted multiple missionaries and develops long-term relationships with them. Regularly prays for missionaries. Provides multiple opportunities throughout the year for church businessmen, staff, and young people to go on short-term trips. Has a yearly missions conference.

Level 6: Church has a Bible school that trains people to be missionaries. Church trains, sends out, and supports multiple full-time missionaries. A significant percentage (5%-15%) of the church budget is devoted to missions. Church may have adopted a particular nation or people group to focus efforts on.

Level 7: Church has a world-wide Apostolic vision for growing the body of Christ. Church reproduces itself on multiple continents by planting Bible schools and churches. Speaks mission vision to the body of Christ and develops strategy for world evangelism.

The mission of the church is missions and the goal of missions is building the local church.

What does the Bible say about Habits?

1. God has a habit of being merciful. “Look upon me and be merciful to me, As Your custom is toward those who love Your name” (Psalm 119:132 NKJV).

2. Daniel had a habit of praying 3 times every day (Dan 6:10). He continued this habit even when it put his life in danger. “Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went home. And in his upper room, with his windows open toward Jerusalem, he knelt down on his knees three times that day, and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as was his custom since early days” (Daniel 6:10 NKJV).

3. Jesus had a habit of going to the synagogue on the Sabbath. “So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read” (Luke 4:16 NKJV).

4. Jesus made a habit of spending time with His Father. “And when He had sent the multitudes away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. Now when evening came, He was alone there” (Matthew 14:23 NKJV).

5. Paul warned against those who form bad habits. “Besides, they get into the habit of being idle and going about from house to house. And not only do they become idlers, but also busybodies who talk nonsense, saying things they ought not to” (1 Timothy 5:13 NIV).

6. The writer of Hebrews told us to form good habits, like going to church.“not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching” (Hebrews 10:25 NIV).

How to Change Your Habits

The best way to begin changing your habits is by changing your thinking. “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind...”(Romans 12:2). The pattern of this world is a set of habits. This pattern of habits is often called the rat-race of life. It is composed of the continual search for another dollar, the lusting after wrong things, the coveting of a neighbor’s worldly goods, or the search for adventure; all of these things form a pattern of habits. People wake up in the morning, and they race through the day, thinking only of themselves, and then they fall into bed at night without accomplishing anything. Every day, God is not acknowledged, and the person continues to live a life of sin, day in and day out, for an entire life.

A change of habits will only come with a change of mind. This change of mind must occur through God’s word. The only way to renew your mind is by knowing God.

When you renew your mind with God’s word, you begin to think like Jesus. When you think like Jesus, you act like Jesus. Suddenly, habits change. The worldly pattern of lying, cheating, stealing, coveting, and hatred is suddenly transformed.

A new set of habits begins to form in the place of the old habits. The habit of loving others, the habit of being thankful, the habit of worshiping God; these are the habits of a person whose mind has been renewed by the word of God. Focus shifts from, “me, me, me” to “God, God, God” The question changes from “What do I want to do?” to “What does God want me to do?”

A habit is any action or behavior that you do on a regular basis. There are both good habits (developed by good actions) and bad habits (developed by bad actions).

Most of the actions you do on a daily basis are habitual. Today you will most likely do the same things you did yesterday, and the day before, and the day before that. Tomorrow you will have exactly the same results you have today, unless you change your habits.

Your life is the sum of all your habits. Every area of your life has been shaped by your habits. Habits, both good and bad, create who you are.

My health is the result of my habits.

My wealth is the result of my habits

My books are the result of my habits.

My weight is the result of my habits.

My friendships are the result of my habits.

My productivity is the result of my habits.

First, you form habits, then habits form you. After you develop a habit, you become a servant to that habit.

When I first started writing, I was a horrible writer. But I decided to spend one hour every day typing on my computer. At first it was torture, but eventually I started to get better. Now, I have written fourteen books mainly because I forced myself to develop the habit of writing.

A habitual action becomes a well-worn groove in your mind. Like an old fashioned record player where the same song plays every time the needle drops, your mind eventually plays the exact same tune over and over again. As a sign said on a particularly bumpy road, “Pick your rut carefully, because you will be in it for the next two hundred miles.”

If you are satisfied with your life, congratulations, you have good habits. If there is some area of your life you are no happy with, change your habits.

The good news is that habits can change. Mike Murdock says, “Anything you do twice becomes easier to do again” Experts say, “If you do something continually every day for thirty days, it will become a new habit.” Small daily changes will eventually add up to huge changes over the course of your lifetime. Tiny stones thrown on a pile in time become a big mountain.

7 Pillars of Character

1. Honesty: To always tell the truth. To leave no false impression.
“Lying lips are abomination to the Lord: but they that deal truly are his delight” (Proverbs 12:22).

2. Integrity: To do what is right no matter what the circumstances.
“The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him” (Proverbs 20:7).

3. Humility: To esteem others as individuals. To acknowledge dependence upon God and those around me.
“For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith” (Romans 12:3).

4. Purity: To live pure in thought and deed. To take captive every thought that sets its self up against the knowledge of God.
“Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God” (2 Cor. 7:1).

5. Consistency: To keep showing up. To live a life of character all of the time not just when it is convenient.
“Moreover I will establish his kingdom for ever, if he be constant to do my commandments and my judgments, as at this day” (1 Chron. 28:7).

6. Accountability: To be accountable to God and to men. To maintain a system of checks and balances in every area of life. To always have someone who is able to make any correction needed.
“So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God” (Romans 14:12).

7. Responsibility: To take responsibility for every action within my control. To account for myself and those under me. “But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more” (Luke 12:48).

8 Truths About Character

1. Character is celebrated and rewarded. “And now, my daughter, don’t be afraid. I will do for you all you ask. All the people of my town know that you are a woman of noble character” (Ruth 3:11 NIV)

2. Character is more important than beauty, intelligence, or ability. “A wife of noble character is her husband’s crown, but a disgraceful wife is like decay in his bones” (Proverbs 12:4 NIV).

3. Character is rare and valuable. “A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies” (Proverbs 31:10 NIV).

4. Character is imparted to those who study Scripture and apply the truths they discover. “Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true” (Acts 17:11 NIV).

5. Character is built during times of trouble. “And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope” (Romans 5:3-4 NKJV).

6. Character is built over time, not created overnight. The preparations of today determine your qualifications for tomorrow. “But you know his proven character, that as a son with his father he served with me in the gospel” (Philippians 2:22 NKJV).

7. Character is shaped by those you spend time with. “Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character” (1 Corinthians 15:33).

8. Character is formed by your decisions. “For we are each responsible for our own conduct” (Galatians 6:5). You cannot fail without your consent and you cannot succeed without your participation.

The Importance of Character

Character is who you are on the inside. Character is what you do when no one is watching. The things you do on a daily basis will continue to be the things that you do in the midst of a crisis or an opportunity. Character is the moral compass that charts the course to your destiny.

Your gift can take you to the top, but only your character can keep you there. Gifting builds, character maintains. Talent and ability can bring success, but character will make you successful.

Character begins in your heart. Never get beaten on the inside, because it will only be a matter of time before you will be beaten on the outside. “Above all else, guard your heart for it is the wellspring of life” (Proverbs 4:23).

Preachers fall when their gifting supersedes their character. Over the years there have been many ministers who have been found lacking in the area of character. Many ministers are talented and charismatic but they ended up hurting many people and the kingdom of God because of a lack of character.

Preaching a powerful sermon matters little when your lifestyle does not match your advice. Actions speak louder than words. What you do speaks so loud I cannot even hear what you are saying.

Don’t bring shame to His Name. A reputation takes a lifetime to build and it can be destroyed in an instant. Character is the only thing that stands between you and public failure. Never do anything behind closed doors that you would not want your mother watching on the nightly news.

So, I was in India for Thanksgiving. My brother and I heard there might be a Subway sandwich shop somewhere in Delhi and we figured their 6" turkey sub would be our best bet at getting turkey for Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, our cab driver was not able to find a Subway so we decided to go for McDonalds instead. After two weeks of curry, nothing sounded better than a Big Mac. Imagine our surprise to discover that McDonald's most famous sandwich is not served in India, in fact, there is NO BEEF to be found at India's McDonalds. McVeggie Burger anyone?

Notice the top photo that says "No Photography allowed." Employees kept trying to prevent me from taking these pictures. Apparently India McDonald's is trying to keep news of the McVeggie burger from getting out to the rest of the world.

Church Built for New Believers

Seven years ago, missionary evangelist Marcus Bloom held his first Gospel Festival in Jharkhand in the village of Manoharpur. At that time, many people in the village gave their lives to Jesus. A church was started in the home of one of the new believers. Over time, more people from the village became Christian and the church outgrew the home. They began to meet under a tree. During the rainy season, they would meet in a mud hut but the roof of the hut was filled with holes and people still got wet.

When I heard that the village has over two hundred believers and no church building, I decided to help them build a church. We purchased a piece of land, bricks, and material for the roof. The local believers helped build the church with their own hands.

In the village, we held a mini-crusade and then dedicated the church. Several dozen villagers gave their lives to Jesus. We commissioned Pastor Haren Kandulna to pastor the church. The local believers are so excited to have a beautiful church building with a roof over their heads. One local believer said, “Now that we have a church building, I think the entire village will become Christian.”

Pastor Sunny told me, “For over five years, I have been praying for a church building in this village.” Then he choked up and started to cry because he was so happy his prayers had been answered.

The Fun of Traveling

My mother and my brother David got to join me for this trip to India! It was great to have them along!

We tried to figure out how to play the favorite local game of Cricket. Today we played against a group of local pastors. They beat us 38 to 37 balls. We only had one wicket remaining to win.

This is the closest I have ever been to a tiger. I think he could have easily jumped out of his cage if he had wanted to. Luckily, I heard that Indian tigers, like most of India, are vegetarian.

Hindu Family Comes to Christ

She is One in a Million

Kanti Devi is a Hindu woman who lives 1.5 kilometers away from our Gospel Festival site. She was given a flyer that announced that Jesus would perform miracles and she decided to come to the Gospel Festival. When she heard the preaching and saw the miracles, she knew the rest of her family needed to hear the same message.

She called her daughter, Seema Devi, who lives 130 kilometers away and invited her to come. The daughter got on the bus and traveled for four hours. Together the mother, her husband, and her daughter all attended the next night. They sat in chairs at the very back of the crowd. They enjoyed the music from the local worship team.

They listened intently to a story about Jesus. In response to the altar call, the whole family came forward to pray to Jesus. We gave each of them a copy of the Gospel of John. We prayed for them and introduced them to a local pastor whose church is within walking distance of their home.

Pastor’s Conference Changes Jharkhand

Five hundred pastors representing 22 out of 24 districts in the Indian state of Jharkhand came to our pastor’s conference. Also represented were pastors from the Indian states of Orissa, Bihar, Assam, Sikkim, Chhatisgar, West Bengal, and from the nation of Nepal and the border of Bhutan. The pastors came from a broad spectrum of denominations including Catholic, Lutheran, Anglican, Baptist, Pentecostal, Assembly of God, and the Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Some pastors traveled for several days from remote villages to attend. They arrived by auto-rickshaw, bus, walking, and by motorcycle. Before they gave their lives to Jesus, many of the pastors were from Hindu, Muslim, and Tribal religion backgrounds.

Because of the poverty in India, we helped pay for the pastor’s transportation and we provided lodging and food during the five day conference. Pastor A.J. Barjo from Ranchi said, “The conference was historical for our city. It was very well organized. Every pastor enjoyed this conference and appreciated the spiritual food and the physical food that we were fed. All the pastors are now motivated to go reach the lost.”

A member of the State Parliament and a Cabinet Minister welcomed the pastors to Ranchi. A Hindu newspaper reported on the conference with a favorable review.

On the first night of the conference, our team felt prompted by the Holy Spirit to give an altar call. Even though only pastors were supposed to be in attendance, we obeyed and a Hindu man who was visiting responded by giving his life to Jesus.

The focus of the conference was on soul winning. We challenged the pastors to go to the unreached villages of Jharkhand to plant churches.

The pastors were extremely attentive and took notes on each message. Daniel’s mother Susan challenged the pastors to pray diligently. Daniel’s brother David spoke about “God’s Purpose for Your Life.” Daniel spoke on “3 Reasons to be a Soul Winner”, “How to Lead People to Jesus,” and “The Fire of God.” Our co-evangelist Marcus Bloom spoke on “7 Gospel Truths” and “7 Secrets of a Successful Ministry.” He gave a copy of his new book “The Final Lap” to every pastor.

On the final day, we laid hands on each pastor and sent them out to fulfill the Great Commission. Many pastors were filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke in other tongues for the first time. They returned home happy and motivated to do big things for God!

Ranchi, India Impacted by the Gospel

Thousands of people attended each night of our Gospel Festival in Ranchi, India.

Excitement was high in the city when we arrived. Colorful posters promising salvation and miracles covered the walls of the city. Massive billboards and banners combined with radio and television ads created excitement about the event.

A clear salvation message was preached each evening. One night, Daniel preached on “The Paralyzed Man”, another night he preached on “The Four Greatest Miracles in the Bible.” Daniel’s co-evangelist from Sweden, Marcus Bloom, preached on “The Cross of Jesus,” “The Adulterous Woman,” and “The Rich Man and Lazarus.”

When the altar call was given, thousands of people streamed forward to the front to receive Jesus. As they entered the altar call area, a counselor greeted each person by handing him or her a copy of the Gospel of John and a decision card. Around 10,000 decision cards were filled out by the end of the five-day festival.The Gospel Festival also aired each day on three major television stations in Ranchi and Delhi that reach most of northern India. Our half-hour program was aired three times each day to hundreds of thousands of viewers. In response to the television program, over 700 people called asking for prayer.

Christmas in Mexico

The mother, her 6-year-old son, and her 10-year-old daughter grabbed my attention. They lived in a tiny shack made of wooden pallets and cardboard boxes. They were cold and hungry on the day before Christmas.

Right away, I handed the mother two sacks, one full of beans and another full of rice. We gave each member of the family a coat. I found a brown teddy bear with a red ribbon around his neck and handed it to the girl and then I gave a brand-new soccer ball to the boy. These toys were the only gifts they would receive that Christmas.

Before they went home, I gave each of them a bag filled with peanuts, candy, an orange and an apple.

I was only twelve years old at that time, but even as a child, I knew I was making a real difference in the life of that Mexican family.

You Can Make a Difference

For over twenty years, my family has been ministering in Juarez, Mexico. Every Christmas, we made it a family tradition to bring Christmas to the children of Mexico. Every year, I felt privileged to make a difference in the life of Mexican children.

Today, the need in Juarez is greater than ever before. Because of drug gangs, violence has hit an all time high in the city. CBS News recently reported that “Juarez has become the murder capital of the world.”

The need is great. So, I decided to return to Juarez, Mexico for our next big outreach. We are calling it: “Fiesta de la Navidad” (Christmas Celebration).

* This Christmas, we will take a message of hope to Ciudad Juarez.

* This Christmas, we will give away Christmas gifts to the poorest of the poor in Juarez.

* This Christmas, we need your help to do this outreach.

Missions Adventures: Bus Ride

One of the seats broke on our rented van and there is not enough room for all the team members, so Jessica, Alisa (Jessica’s sister), and I decided to take the public bus back to Kampala. We got on the bus at 5:30 am so we could get good seats near the front. The bus is scheduled to leave at 6:30 am but it waits until 7 am to get on the road. By the time we leave, it has standing room only. The aisles are full of people holding onto a bar embedded in the roof. One woman is holding a chicken. A man has a big bunch of bananas and another woman is trying to keep her three small children from crying.

We stop at every mud hut village to see if anyone wants to go with us to Kampala. When the bus is not stopped, it is recklessly driving around corners on narrow mountain dirt roads. On one side is a hill that goes straight up one hundred feet. On the other side is a cliff that goes straight down for one thousand feet. Our driver feels like driving within inches of the ledge. I look out my window and see straight down to a river far down in the valley below. We bump and jolt for an hour and finally cross the river on a shaky little bridge. Then our bus huffs and puffs its way up the other side of the canyon.

In an effort to make up for lost time, our driver steps on the gas. We are still on dirt roads so it is not long before we hit a bump and hear a loud creaking sound under the bus. The driver pulls over and looks under the front wheels. It appears we have broken a spring. No worries though. The driver jacks up the bus and uses a rope to tie up the spring. This shoestring repair takes an hour but it is enough to get us to the next town.

We all jump off the bus while six mechanics take off the old spring and put on a new one. The passengers stand around waiting and finally wander off to find some lunch. Two hours later we are back on the road.

I feel like we made a bad decision in taking the bus instead trying to find a way to squeeze into our rented van. But then we receive a call that the van has broken down too. It becomes a race to see which vehicle can be fixed first. Our bus limps into Kampala a distant second. Our nine-hour bus ride ends up taking fourteen hours. Then we embark on a one-hour taxi ride to our hotel through downtown traffic. That’s Africa for you.

Let Your Light Shine

The Bible says in Matthew 5:16, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” Every Christian should be a shining light. Are you letting your light shine?

Recently, I had the opportunity to see one of the greatest natural wonders of the world. I went with my family to view Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico. We started at the top of the cave and hiked down into the depths of the earth. As we hiked, the guides told us stories about the original explorers of the cave. These brave adventurers would venture into the dark with nothing but a tiny lamp to show the way.

When we were more then a mile underground, the guide sat our group down and told us that she was going to duplicate the original conditions the explorers went through. Our guide went over to the light switch and turned it off. Suddenly, it was totally and completely dark. We could not see our hands in front of our faces or the person next to us. It was dark!

After waiting in the dark for five minutes so our eyes would dilate, the guide pulled out a cigarette lighter out and told us that the small flame from the lighter was the same amount of light the explorers would have had. When she told us she was going to light it, I thought the lighter would light up her face, or perhaps the area around her feet. We were in a huge room and there was no way the flicker of flame would affect the darkness much.

But, when the lighter was lit, suddenly we could see the entire room. We could see the stalactites and the stalagmites, we could see the roof and the people around us. That one tiny light lit up the whole room!

The world is a dark place, but one Christian light in a dark place will light the entire area up! Evil is dark, but one act of love can make darkness flee. By letting our light shine, we bring glory to our Father in heaven.

For years, scientists have argued about the definition of light. Some experiments show that light is a series of particles, other experiments prove that light is a wave. Finally, there is one definition that many agree on. Light is the presence of power! Light is power, every living thing on earth relies on the sun for power. Without light, we would not be able to live.

Darkness is not an opposite power, it is only the absence of power. Therefore, if God is light, and Satan is the prince of darkness; God has all the power and Satan has none. Darkness can not survive in the presence of light. As soon as light comes into a room, darkness must leave.

Light travels at 186,000 miles per second. This means that when you flip the light switch in your room, darkness leaves the room at 186,000 miles per second. When a Christian walks into a dark area, Satan must run.

Every lightbulb needs a power source. Every Christian also needs a source of power. Jesus promised, “But you shall receive power after the Holy Spirit comes upon you and you shall be witnesses unto me in Jerusalem, and Judea, and Samaria, and unto the uttermost ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8). The Holy Spirit is our power source and he gives us the ability to be a shining light around the world.

Oswald J. Smith once said, ‘The light that shines farthest, shines brightest near to home.” When we reach out to the lost, love the unlovable, heal the sick, and do good works; we are letting our light shine. We are supposed to go everywhere and to tell everyone about Jesus.

I challenge you to be a witness of God’s power in your home, in your neighborhood, in your workplace, in other countries, and unto the uttermost ends of the earth.

When light goes through a prism, it is split into a spectrum of colors. The white light becomes beams of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. Light is actually composed of all these colors mingled together. Since Christians are the ones who shine God’s light to the world, the miracle is that God has taken so many different types of colors, types, and flavors of Christianity and mingled us into a single, powerful light.

Remember the song you used to sing as a child, “This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine..?” Well, this is a good time to begin shining. You can shine by helping with community outreach, going on a mission trip, or by smiling at a lonely heart.

The words of God are echoing across the centuries, “Let there be light....” and the answer rings ever louder, “...and there was light” (Genesis 1:1). We are the light of the world.

Is Hell a Real Place? Jesus Thought It Was.

The sad truth about Rob Bell's new book is that thousands of people will go to hell because he told them not to fear it.

Luke 16:27-28 “Then he said, ‘I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father’s house, for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.’”

Is hell a real place? Jesus said it was. Jesus told this vivid story about the horrors of hell.

Once there was a rich man who always dressed in the best clothes and feasted everyday on the best foods and wines available. At his front gate there was a beggar named Lazarus who suffered from open sores on his skin. Everyday Lazarus waited by the gate, hoping to be fed with the leftovers from the rich man’s table. His only relief was when the rich man’s dogs came and licked his sores. One day, both the beggar and the rich man died.

The beggar went to heaven. The rich man went to hell. As the rich man was being tormented in the fires of hell, he looked up and saw the beggar in heaven, standing next to Abraham. He shouted to them, “Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus to me. Have him dip the tip of his finger in water and touch my tongue, for I am tormented in this flame.”

Abraham replied, “Between us there is a great chasm, so that no one can pass from heaven to hell, or from there to here.”

Then, the rich man became concerned for his five brothers who were still living. He begged Abraham, “I beg you therefore, father, that you would send Lazarus to my father’s house, for I have five brothers, that he might testify to them, and prevent them from coming to this place of torment.”

Abraham refused the rich man’s request, saying, “If your brothers have not heeded the words of Moses and the prophets, then they will not listen to Lazarus, even if he comes back from the dead.”

In this story, we find a soulwinning call from the pits of hell. If we could hear the voices of people who have gone to hell, they would shout with all their might, “Don’t come here!” ”

Some theologians have dismissed this vision of hell by saying it is nothing but a parable. It is not a parable; it is a horror story about a reality that lies just beyond death’s door. In every parable which Jesus told, the characters have no names, but in this story Jesus tells us the names of the people in the story. They are real people with real names engaging in real dialogue.

Other theologians have tried to soften the threat of hell by saying that hell is simply a state of nothingness. But for this rich man, hell is a genuinely horrible place. This man has his senses, his memory, his reason; he is thirsty, he is in torment, he can think, and he is concerned about his family members who are still alive.

Our society often says that hell is one big party, a place for old friends to get drunk together for all of eternity. But according to Jesus, hell is not a party; it is torment. This man suffers from such agonizing thirst that he begs for just a drop of water to be placed on his tongue.

In this horror story, we hear a soulwinning call from hell. The rich man is begging for someone to go tell his family that hell is a real place. If the dead could speak, they would warn us of the dangers of hell.

This is how I know psychics are fake. When psychics claim to talk to voices from “the other side,” those voices always have nice things to say. If psychics really spoke to dead people, many of those people would be shouting, “Hell is a real place. Tell my relatives to get their lives right with God.”

If the church really had a revelation about the reality of hell, it would light a fire under us to be soulwinners. If you spent just ten seconds in hell, how motivated would you be to rescue people from such a horrible fate? Ten seconds in hell would provide enough motivation for ten thousand years worth of soulwinning efforts.

What is hell like? The Bible tells us the wicked shall be cast into hell (Psalm 9:17). Hell is a place of torment (Luke 16:28). Hell is a place of fire that is never quenched (Matthew 5:22; 18:9; Mark 9:43). Hell destroys the soul and the body (Matthew 10:28). Hell has worms that do not die (Mark 9:45). Hell is a place prepared for the punishment of the devil and his angels (2 Peter 2:4). Jesus has defeated hell (1 Corinthians 15:55). Jesus took the keys of death and hell (Revelation 1:18). Anyone whose name is not found in the book of life will be cast into hell (Revelation 20:15).

His Command

In the darkest of parts

Go where the night is the blackest,
Go where sin’s reign is complete,
Go in the name of King Jesus,
That name that knows no defeat.

The balm that can heal all the bruises,
Caused in the conflict with sin.

Tonight my sermon was on “The Prodigal Son.” I preached, “even if you are one thousand steps away from God, it is only one step back.” When I gave the altar call I asked everyone who was living away from God to come home to the Father’s house.

One man ran to the front and fell to his knees. He began to cry. As I knelt down beside him, I noticed that he reeked of alcohol. He was half drunk. He told me his name was Abraham. As we knelt together, he gloriously repented and cried out to Jesus for forgiveness.

A lady from a local church told me, “Everyone in the city knows Abraham. Many years ago, he used to pastor a church in this city. But then he fell away from God. Nowadays he is known as a public nuisance because he is always drunk.” The whole city was astonished to see the man who had once been a pastor, but then turned away from God, came home to the Father’s house.

After the service, Abraham told me God had also healed him. He said, “Three years ago, I was in an accident and my shoulder was injured. I started to drink alcohol to dull the pain. But, now the pain is gone. Jesus has healed me.” I prayed with him and told him that God wants to restore him completely.

Man Who Attempted to Commit Suicide Surrenders to God

Mauricio gave his life to Jesus tonight. As I prayed for him, I noticed that he had a bandage over his left eye and that entire side of his face drooped toward the floor. He explained to me that he has been living far away from God. His life became so desperate that he decided to commit suicide. He put a pistol to his chin and pulled the trigger. The bullet passed through his jaw, shattered his cheekbone, and exited through his eye socket. But, by the mercy of God, his life was spared. I told him that Satan had tried to take his life, but that God had saved him. I explained that God has a purpose for his life and I encouraged him to follow God with all his heart.

Tribal Warfare Destroys Homes

In the area where we conducted our Gospel Festival there are over thirty homes that have been burned down and destroyed by tribal warfare in the past six weeks.

I visited one home. The walls were bashed in. The roof was gone. Ashes covered the floor. Broken pottery was scattered around. A mother and her two daughters were sleeping in the open air.

The mother explained, “My family is from one tribe and we are living in an area claimed by another tribe. They tell us we have to leave, but this is our home. One dark night a mob of young men from the other tribe marched down the street with fierily torches. They lit fire to the all the houses of my tribe. They stole our possessions. Now we have nothing and nowhere to go.”

At the Gospel Festival we preached that Jesus loves the people of every tribe. We asked the different tribes to forgive each other and to live in peace. Thousands gave their lives to Jesus. Now that the Prince of Peace is reigning in the hearts of the people, we pray that there will be peace between the tribes.

Candy Riot

We left early for the children’s festival in order to get everything set up. When we arrived, over 1,000 children had already gathered. The only available sound system was being used by the pastor’s conference so we were forced to entertain the kids for an hour without sound.

More and more children poured in from every direction until there were almost 5,000 kids. When the sound finally arrived, we kicked off the service by singing an Ethiopian song. All the kids were dancing and jumping up and down.

Then we introduced Pastor Eric Hamp. He is a children’s pastor from Denver, CO and the mission’s director for the International Network of Children’s Ministry. Pastor Eric played some games with the children and taught them a new song, “Allelu, allelu, allelu, halleluiah, Jesu get tano. (Praise Jesus)”.

I did not have any room to bring juggling props in my suitcase but I managed to find some local equivalents. For juggling balls, I used five potatoes and for juggling clubs I found three toilet plungers (new, never used). The kid’s laughed and clapped as I tossed the objects in the air.

Then Pastor Eric began to preach to the children. They listened intently as he shared the gospel message using simple props. All the children prayed to receive salvation.

When the service was over, I stationed ushers at each of the gates with boxes of candy. We tried to form an orderly line of children but passing out the candy quickly descended into a riot. All the children pushed and shoved to get the sweets. They tried to climb through a barbed wire fence in order to get in line again. They grabbed handfuls of candy and ran away. Even one of the ushers picked up an entire box of candy and tried to run away with it. Within minutes 36,000 pieces of candy had completely disappeared. Afterwards, we were just thankful that none of the children were seriously injured.

Work It!

At the pastor's conference, the church was completely full so hundreds of people gathered around the church and sat on the grass listening to the message. While one of our team members preached, I decided to take pictures of the people.

I began by taking a portrait shot of one woman. Then I turned my camera around and showed her the picture on my digital screen. She started laughing and then all the other women wanted their pictures taken.

At the back of the group was an ancient woman dressed in typical Ethiopian clothes. She only had two and a half teeth in her head. She was almost totally blind. But, as I was taking pictures of the other women this old lady started saying over and over again, "Work it, work it."

She did not know any English but somehow she knew that when you take pictures you are supposed to say, "Work It." Her one phrase of English made me laugh so hard.

He Could Not Walk or Talk

One family desperately needed a miracle. They live in a village that is one hundred and twenty three miles away from where we are conducting our Gospel Festival. Somehow, a publicity flyer made it all the way to their village. When the mother saw the announcement that Jesus would heal the sick, she decided to come. The five family members gathered up all the money they had and purchased bus tickets for 40 burr each to come to the city where our Gospel Festival was taking place.

The youngest member of the family is Brroke. He is a seven-year-old boy and from birth he has been unable to walk or talk. When the family arrived at the festival grounds, they asked where they should go to receive a miracle. An usher told them to sit in the sick tent.

In the middle of the service, Pastor Eric Hamp, one of our team members entered the tent and began to pray for the sick. The family waited patiently for their turn. When Pastor Eric came to them, they pointed to the boy's mouth. "Can he speak?" Pastor Eric asked. "No, he has been unable to speak since birth," the mother explained.

Pastor Eric laid his hands on the boy's head and began to pray. Then he put his fingers inside the boy's mouth and grabbed his tongue. "I curse this dumb spirit in the name of Jesus, come out of this boy," he commanded as he jerked the boy's tongue. Startled, the boy stared at him. Pastor Eric looked right in the boy's eyes and said, "Halleluiah."

To everyone's amazement, the boy repeated the word. When the mother heard her son say "Halleluiah," she started to shout. Right there in the prayer tent, the entire family began to dance and celebrate because of the miracle. Then Brroke stood up and began to walk for the first time in his life. He was completely healed.

The family came to the platform to testify. The crowd listened in amazement as they heard about the miracle in Brroke's life. In front of all the people, Brroke shouted "Halleluiah" and ran back and forth across the platform.

Later, as we interviewed the family about the miracle, we asked the mother, "Are you happy?" With a smile she replied, "Yes" but then she paused and said, "My daughter, Teshsale, also needs healing. She is deaf in her right ear." The team prayed for the daughter and immediately God opened her ear and she could hear. The entire family received the miracles they needed.

Ex-Mayor Says He will Follow Jesus

On the third night of the Nepal Healing Festival, we issued a challenge, “If you have decided to follow Jesus, come up on the platform and testify.” The first person to come to the platform was the ex-mayor of the city. The entire crowd recognized him. He publicly declared, “I have decided to follow Jesus. I asked Jesus to forgive my sins. From now on, I will live for Him.” All the people cheered for the former mayor.

Saved in the Morning, Healed in the Afternoon

On the fourth morning of the Fire Conference, Daniel gave an altar call for salvation. The Fire Conference is supposed to be for pastors and leaders, but we opened it up for the entire city to attend. Since there were many Hindus scattered throughout the church crowd, Daniel felt the need to give them an opportunity to be saved.

He said, “If you want Jesus to forgive your sins, then I invite you to come to the front of the church. If you have never given your life to Jesus, then today is your day.” About twenty people walked forward in response. Daniel asked them to all kneel on the ground and led them in a prayer for salvation.

One of the men who came forward for salvation was crippled. He could not walk without using a cane. Joyfully, he gave his life to Jesus.

Later, in the afternoon festival, the same man came to the platform. Instead of leaning on his cane, he was holding it high in the air. Jesus had healed him!

Nepal is Open to the Gospel

My wife Jessica worked in Nepal as a missionary for six months back in 2001. She says, “When I lived in Katmandu (the capital of Nepal) I could feel deep spiritual oppression every day. Believers were few and persecuted. At that time, Nepal was a Hindu kingdom closed to the Gospel. Daily we prayed that things would change in this beautiful nation.”

Since then, the government has changed hands several times and now for the first time in history, it is possible to publicly proclaim the Gospel in Nepal. The Healing Festival that we are doing in the center of Surkhet is unprecedented.

We have received no opposition, no persecution. Top government officials have given us their stamp of approval. There is great openness to hear about Jesus. Thousands of Hindus have come to the festival and heard about Jesus for the first time. Here in Nepal there are entire villages and people groups that are willing to forsake their Hindu deities and become believers in Jesus.

All the local pastors are telling us that it is a miracle that we are doing a public, open-air presentation of the Gospel in the center of the city, because previously it would never have been allowed.

Hindu Mother Saved

Hindu Mother Saved

Koussila comes from a Hindu family. She became a believer several years ago and ever since, she has had one prayer. Her one request to God was for her mother to be saved.

When Koussila head about the “Healing Festival” she was very excited. She volunteered to help setting up the festival. For three weeks she worked hard putting all the details of the festival together. Since she speaks English, she was able to translate regularly for Joshua Myers, our festival director.

As Koussila worked putting up posters and inviting people to the festival, she prayed that her mother would be willing to attend. On the first night of the festival, her prayers were answered.

Her mother stood behind the platform as the preaching began. She listened to every word. But, when we led the crowd in the salvation prayer, Koussila’s mother just stood there.

Koussila was helping us translate the miracle testimonies. After the healing testimonies were finished, Koussila left the platform and went to her mother. “Did you pray with the preacher to make Jesus your Lord?” she asked her mother. “No, I have been a Hindu my whole life and I was scared,” came the reply. Koussila began to witness to her mother. She explained the message to her and told her what it means to be a follower of Jesus. After several minutes, she asked her mother, “Would you pray with me and ask Jesus for salvation?” To Koussila’s delight, her mother said, “Yes.” Right there, behind the platform, Koussila led her mother to Jesus.

With tears in her eyes, Koussila brought her mother to us to share the news. Her mother was smiling. She still had a Hindu red dot in the middle of her forehead, but now Jesus was living in her heart.

Every King Must Have a Throne

Many village people have walked a long distance to attend the Healing Festival. Since it is to far for them to return home each evening, we have provided blankets for them to sleep on at night. All the churches and believers of Surkhet have opened their doors to house the villagers.

Today in the Fire Conference, one of the pastors stood up to address a problem. He said, “We have noticed that many of you have been going to the bathroom out in front of the church. We have a toilet inside the church that we want you to use. Since you are from the villages, perhaps you have never seen a toilet before. God has created you to be kings and queens, and as royalty you must not squat in front of the church, instead you must sit on the throne. Please learn how to use the toilet.”

Yes, we have Hot Water.

Before we arrived, our crusade director checked out our hotel rooms to make sure they were comfortable. One of the questions he asked the hotel manager was, “Does this hotel have hot water?” The answer was, “Yes, of course we do.”

To my disappointment, after a long dusty day preaching in the sun, I discovered that only freezing cold water came out of the showerhead. I gritted my teeth and took a cold shower. Sometimes when you are on a mission trip, you have to suffer for the Lord.

The next morning, at 5:30am there was a knock on the door. Blurry eyed, I answered the door. It was the desk clerk. In his hand was a pitcher of steaming hot water. “You want hot water for your shower?” he asked. By mixing hot and cold water in a bucket, I could have warm water to rinse off my body. So, technically the manager did not lie when he said the hotel has hot water, however, I still feel cheated somehow.

God is Good

On the second night of the Nepal Healing Festival, Daniel King preached about the goodness of God. He told the crowd, “Everything good comes from God. Everything evil comes from Satan.”

Daniel proclaimed, “Sin, sickness, hate, fear, and poverty is from Satan; salvation, healing, love, peace, and prosperity is from Jesus.” The crowd laughed as Daniel tried to pronounce some of the words in the local language.

Then Daniel informed the people that a choice must be made between following God or following the way of sin. He read John 10:10, “The thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy, but Jesus came to give you abundant life.” He continued with a passage from Deuteronomy, “Today, God sets before you life and death, blessing and cursing, therefore choose life.” Finally, Daniel explained that Jesus said there is a broad road that leads to destruction, and a narrow way that leads to life.

“Every person must make a choice whether they will follow Jesus or follow the way that leads to death. Do you choose to go to heaven or do you want to spend eternity in hell? If you want to be a follower of Jesus, raise your hand.” Across the field, thousands of people lifted their hands high into the air. Virtually the entire crowd wanted to follow Jesus.

The Story of Pastor Padam

Twenty years ago, Pastor Padam was thrown in jail for preaching the Gospel. For five months he suffered in prison, wondering how his family was going to survive in his absence. Back then, Nepal was a Hindu kingdom and there was great opposition to the Gospel. But, now there is a new democratic government and people are becoming more open to Christianity. For Pastor Padam, it is a great miracle to be able to stand on a public platform and to talk about Jesus in front of the highest government officials. What he was once jailed for, he can now do in the open.

History Making

Throughout the town people are saying, “We have never seen anything like this before.” To be able to publicly proclaim, in the middle of the city, that Jesus is Lord is a great miracle. Never before have such large crowds of people gathered in this region to hear the Gospel.

Three days before the Nepal Healing Festival was scheduled to begin, the head of our pastor’s committee received a call from the mayor of the city demanding that he come to his office. When the pastor arrived, it was obvious that the mayor was angry. He said, “All over the city, I see yellow posters advertising your Healing Festival. You have painted the entire city yellow. Who gave you permission to do this?”

Politely, the pastor said, “You gave us permission.” He pulled out a sheet of paper that clearly gave the Christians permission to advertise for the festival. At the bottom of the paper, in blue ink, was the mayor’s own signature. The mayor had forgotten that several weeks previously, he had given his permission.

Embarrassed, the mayor began to apologize. The pastor decided to take a chance and said, “Sir, when the Hindus do a festival, you give them money to help with the expenses and when the Buddhists have a festival, you give them money. As you know, the Christians are also tax payers, will you give us some money to help pay for a Christian Festival?”

In a great gesture of welcome, the mayor of the city decided to donate 20,000 rupees (about $280) to the Christian festival.

Welcomed to the City
Over 4,000 Christians welcomed us to their city with a giant rally and parade. A traditional Nepali band marched at the front and provided marching music. Church choirs sang, dancers worshiped the Lord, shouts of “Halleluiah” rang out, and the line of Christians, four persons wide, stretched for almost a kilometer, from one end of the city to the other.

On the sidelines, Hindus gathered to watch the spectacle. They had no idea there were so many Christians in their country. They were amazed to hear the believers singing Christian words to traditional Nepali tunes.

As the parade arrived at the Festival grounds in the middle of the city, the worship team kicked off the festivities with a fast-paced song of praise to Jesus Christ.

Merry Christmas
Many top government officials were curious about why we were in their city so they came to see what was happening. We gave them seats of honor on the platform. On the first day of the festival, I sat next to the chief of police, the chief of the armed forces, and the head administrator of the entire district of Surket.

They started to talk among themselves. It was obvious they were confused about something. Finally, the three of them nominated the head administrator to ask a question.

He leaned over and asked, “What is a healing festival? I have never heard of this before.” He had a very perplexed look on his face. As a Hindu in a predominately Hindu nation, he knew little about Christians and their ways.

“A healing festival is when Jesus heals people emotionally, spiritually, and physically. There are many hurting people and Jesus wants to heal them,” we explained.

“Oh, now I understand,” said the official. Instead of a puzzled look, he had a smile on his face. “This healing festival is a very good thing.”

Then, in a final gesture of peace, he leaned over and said, “Merry Christmas.” It was the only Christian phrase he knew but it was his way of saying that he was happy to have Christians minister healing to the people of Surket.

Hindus Healed on the First Day

Our co-evangelist, Dr. Jack Myers preached the first day on the power of the name of Jesus. Thousands of people shouted the name of Jesus, many of them Hindus calling on Jesus for the first time.

In the middle of the sermon, an elderly gentleman to the right of the platform jumped to his feet and lifted his walking cane in the air. He started to shout, “I’m healed. I’m healed.” The entire crowd turned to look at him. He threw his cane to the ground and began lifting his hands over his head. There was a huge smile on his face. After this spontaneous miracle, the preaching was over as God began to touch people across the field.

People streamed forward to give their testimonies. A blind eye was opened. A man with back pain for four years was healed. Then, a Hindu man came to the platform. He explained that he had been deaf in his right ear for five years. As he listened to the sermon, his ear popped open and he was able to hear. We tested his hearing and he was able to hear even the softest whisper. When the crowd saw that he was Hindu, they began to talk, “Jesus is healing even Hindu people.”

At the end of the first day’s service, as people left the field, it was obvious that word about what had happened was going to spread across the city. The whole town was talking about how Jesus was touching the Hindus.

Sunrise and skies are fair

A day begins without a care:

A day for joy, a day for leisure,

A day for thrills, a day for pleasure.

Youth is merry, youth is gay;

The great Grim Reaper is far away.

But there is a call, ‘tis the Master’s voice:

“I need you today; may I be your choice?

A harvest is waiting and fields are white,

Will you join the reapers in the morning bright?

Awake, O youth to the heavenly vision:

Multitudes - multitudes in the valley of decision.”

Morning sun high above the earth;

A cry of distress in the midst of mirth.

Heathen are born and heathen die;

Is there none to hear their cry?

“Oh yes,” said the youth, “count me as one,

To help in the harvest till the day is done.”

High sun and high noon;

Conscience still heard; memory daunted.

Wealth he’d acquired, yet more was wanted.

(Many were the possessions he proudly

flaunted.)

House and barns, lands and farms,

Streams and ponds, stocks and bonds,

Chickens and hogs, forest and logs,

Sheep and cows, thoroughbred sows,

Crops and flax, meadows and haystacks,

Orchards and cherries, vineyards and berries.

Day was waxing and day was waning,

Still the rich man was entertaining.

For a sinister voice had spoken and said,

“On with the fun; on with the dance;

Make merry while you have a chance.

You’re a man of the times - ten feet tall.”

To conscience he said, “Time yet for the call.”

So a little more folly, and a little more fun.

(And the hours slipped away until there were none.)

Sun rise to sun fall;

The day was wasting on the western wall.

Hands still busy with a thousand things,

As evening descends and curfew rings.

The day has faded into twilight red,

As multitudes hastened to join the dead.

Where are the barns that were filled with plenty?

Where are the thoroughbreds, one hundred and twenty?

Where are the heirlooms, where are the treasures?

Where is the laughter; where are the pleasures?

Where are the parties; where is the wine?

Where are the delicacies and the dinners so fine?

Sun sunk low and night descending,

Summer gone, and the harvest is ending.

Oh, for a chance for time extended.

What is left of the rich man’s prize?

Go out through the valley to yonder hill,

A Reservation in Hell: A Short Story

It was a boring day at Hell’s check-in desk. Only a teenage drunk driver and a Hindu guru had checked in so far. It was not like yesterday when a suicide bomber and his victims arrived. Then the flames had been roaring and a full contingent of demons had been present to drag everyone to the torture chambers. But, for now, the flames smoldered in the darkness and reflected off the brass, maggot eaten nameplate sitting on the desk. Just barely, the name could be seen. William Zane Bub.

The red-faced, deformed demon looked up from his desk and wiped the sweat from his forehead. What was the annoying sound that was disturbing his rest?

“Ring,” blasted the sharp, piercing noise of the antique telephone sitting next to his elbow. Lethargically, he stretched out his claw and grabbed the handset.

In a tired, rebellious voice, he began to sing the jingle management forced him to recite when answering the phone, “Hell, Hell, Hell, Hello. We’re looking foreword to seeing you below. Hell, hell, hell, hello, where the flames are bright and time goes slow...” He decided not to sing the other ninety-four poorly written verses of the hotel’s theme song.

“What can I do you for,” he coughed, “I mean, what can I do for you?”

“My name is John Smith. I want...”

“My enemies call me Bill,” the demon interrupted, “hold for a second, let me find you in the computer.” Bill tapped on his keyboard only to find that the computer had performed an illegal function and had gone into semi-permanent hyphenation. “Stupid computer demons,” he muttered to himself, “those bugs they programmed into this operating system are purely diabolical.”

Finally, John Smith’s info came flickered into life on the screen. Bill took a moment to look over the profile then he spoke into the telephone, “John, I have you right here, it says you were born July 9, 1978, is that correct?”

“Yes,” said John with relief in his voice. The rock music playing while he was on hold was ear splittingly loud and badly out of tune.

“Right, I have your reservation right here. It looks like you made this reservation the first time you lied to your mom when you were three years old.”

“Uhh...I guess so.”

“We have you scheduled to be in the Mausoleum Suite.”

“I don’t want that room.”

Bill chuckled to himself. Here was an opportunity to use the worst of his puns. “You know, people are dying to get in there. Don’t laugh, this is a grave matter. I’m dead serious. Do you know why funerals are so sad? It because six of your best friends let you down,” He waited for the groans but when only silence ensued, he continued, “but on a lighter note, I could put you in the Crypt Chamber.”

“I’m not coming...” John began to explain.

“Nonsense, of course you’re coming. Everyone comes. As a matter of fact, you’re scheduled to be with us sometime next year. I’m sending Agent Death to pick you up real soon. You’ll be able to recognize him, he’s the one with the big sickle. Ha, ha.”

“You are not listening to me, I do not want to come,” John reiterated forcefully.

“Very common response, but you really have no choice, besides, the worms are ready to eat.”

“I’m not going to eat worms” John exclaimed!

“No, of course not sir, the worms eat you. Ha, ha! By the way, do you like rare, medium, or well done...actually, there’s not really an option. We keep the flames so hot that everyone is well-done.”

John was not getting through to Bill. “I am not coming to Hell Hotel.”

“But, you’ve already paid a high price for this reservation.

“How much?”

Bill tapped away at the keyboard for a moment, “So far, your reservation in hell has cost you your health, your wealth, and according to a note here, for your next installment on your payment plan, it will cost you your marriage.”

“I had no idea it was costing me so much.”

Bill gloated, “Well, sir, we try to give you a foretaste of hell, by giving you a little hell on earth.”

“I want a full refund,” John angrily demanded.

“We don’t give refunds, your investment in this reservation is non-refundable.”

“I want more than a refund, I want a seven-fold return.”

Bill paused for a moment. Where had John heard about that clause? It was hidden in the smallest of the small print at the bottom of the contract. Few knew they could demand a seven-fold return on Hell’s prices. Perhaps it was a fluke, he would be careful. “What are you talking about?”

John took a breath and started to explain, ‘Last week, one of my business associates invited me to go to church with him.”

Bill began to squirm, “You didn’t go, did you?”

“I did go, just to be polite.

‘What happened?”

“The people were friendly, the music was nice, and the sermon was interesting.”

Bill breathed a sigh of relief, it sounded like the hundreds of churches where nothing ever really happened on a typical Sunday.

Then he caught his breath as John continued. “After the sermon, the preacher started talking about sin and salvation. I thought about all the wrong things I’ve done and when he asked if anyone wanted to give their lives to God, I raised my hand.”

Furiously Bill said, “You what?”

“I got saved.”

“What?”

“I’m going to heaven when I die.”

“You can’t...I mean, why...Why are you calling me?”

Bill Z. Bub cringed as he listened to John yell, “Because, I’M CANCELING MY RESERVATION IN HELL!”

Will you be a Pig for Jesus?

Once there was a farmyard where a chicken, a cow, and a pig lived. One morning the chicken had an idea. The chicken said, “Brock, bock, let’s make breakfast for the farmer. I’ll give an egg.” The cow said, “Moo, I think that’s a good idea. I’ll give some milk.”

The pig said, “Oink, oink, hold on just a second, I’m not sure I want to give some bacon. If we make breakfast for the farmer, both of you will give a contribution, but I will have to make a sacrifice.”

Are you making a contribution to God, or are you willing to make a sacrifice? I encourage you to “Be a Pig for Jesus.”

3 Things God Does Not Know

1. God does not know anyone that He does not love.
The Bible says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whosoever believth in him shall not perish, but shall have eternal life” (John 3:16). God loves the entire world. God loves you. God believes you are a beautiful person and He wants you to have eternal life. Will you accept God’s love?

2. God does not know anyone who has not sinned.
The Bible says, “All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Everyone has messed up. Sin is when we decide to do things our own way instead of God’s way. “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23). There is a price that must be paid for our sin. The price of sin is death. Jesus Christ paid this price by dying on the cross for our sins. God gave His Son as a gift so we could have eternal life. Do you want eternal life?

3. God does not know any way to get to heaven except through Jesus.
Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). The only way to get to God is through Jesus. The Bible promises, “That if you confess with you mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9). You have sinned. Your sin separates you from God. Jesus died to pay the price for your sin. If you make Jesus the Lord of your Life, God will give you eternal life.

Would you like to make Jesus the Lord of your life? If so, pray this prayer right now. “Dear God in heaven, I am sorry for sinning. Please forgive me. I make Jesus Christ the Lord of my Life. Thank-you for giving me eternal life. In Jesus name, Amen.”

The Last Airbender: How should Christians respond to Buddhist philosophy?

The Last Airbender is the newest movie directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Based on a popular Nickelodeon cartoon, the movie is filled with references to Buddhist philosophy. With the increasing popularity of Buddhism in America, what should be the Christian response? Here is an article I wrote comparing the two religions.

The Two Trees

In Bihar, India there stands a tree called the Bodi Guya tree. Tradition claims that under this tree Buddha was enlightened after many days of meditation.

At the Mount of Olives in Israel, in the garden of Gethsemane, there stands an olive tree. Tradition claims that on the night he was betrayed, Jesus sat under this tree and cried out to God his Father.

I have seen both trees. I found that both of these great men struggled with the same problem while sitting under their respective trees. Both Buddha and Jesus suffered and confronted the problem of suffering, but they offered two different solutions

Suffering is a universal problem. In these modern times, one only has to watch the news for a few moments to discover horrible suffering somewhere in the world. A fire burns down a house. Famine causes starvation. War kills the innocent. Disease ravages bodies. The wealth of one stands in sharp contrast to the poverty of another. Children go to bed hungry. In many places, there is no hope, no dignity, no self-worth, and no future for humanity.

Buddha was deeply impacted by the suffering he saw four thousand years ago. Buddha was born as a prince and raised in protected luxury until one day he saw a poor leper. This confrontation with reality shook him and he began searching for a solution to the problems of this world.

In India, where Buddha walked there is an air of oppression throughout the society. Their fatalistic and pessimistic worldview promotes the idea of karma (works), reincarnation, and the caste system. Millions suffer their entire lives. Few believe that life can be better.

Under his tree, Buddha discovered the four noble truths of Buddhism. The first truth was “Life is Dukkha” (suffering). As he wondered around India as a monk, he saw the horrible plight of the beggars, experienced the depths of human poverty, and questioned old age, death, and the afterlife. Under that tree, he reached a conclusion, all of life is full of dukkah, nothing but suffering.

The second noble truth Buddha articulated is that “This suffering is because of our desire.” What desire? The desire to have a hot meal, a place to sleep, clothes to wear, sanitation, health care, education, to have someone who loves you and whom you can love, a better life for one’s children, the desire to live life to the fullest. When we want something and don’t get it, we start to suffer.

The third truth of Buddha’s enlightenment is that “When desire is eliminated, suffering is eliminated.” If you want nothing, you will not be disappointed when you do not get it.

Buddha’s fourth truth revealed the “Eight-Fold Path” to removing desire from your life. This led to the Buddhist philosophy of renunciation that has been practiced throughout the ages. Buddhist monks give up all their possessions, shave their heads, and live extremely ascetic lifestyles. They meditate for years attempting to achieve enlightenment, a place of nothingness; no desire, no thoughts, hopefully no suffering.

Under his tree, Jesus dwelt with suffering in a different way. According to Christianity, in the beginning of time, there was no suffering. God created the first man and woman and put them in a beautiful garden. But, one day in the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve disobeyed God. This act of disobedience is called sin. Sin is what causes suffering.

When sin entered the world, sickness, hate, fear, and everything else that breeds suffering entered along with it. The Bible says “The wages of sin is death.” Every person who sins deserves to suffer and to die. The Bible says, “All have sinned.” Every person on earth has disobeyed God; we have lied, cheated, coveted, murdered, and disobeyed God’s commands. Thus, all humans suffer because of sin.

Jesus was God’s answer to the problem of suffering. Jesus, the Son of God, was born two thousands years ago in the city of Bethlehem. When Jesus walked the dusty streets of Israel, he too saw suffering. He experienced the depths of grief and pain. He cried. But his response was one of compassion.

When Jesus saw a man who was crippled for thirty-eight years, Jesus healed him by saying, “Take up your bed and walk.” When Jesus found a dead twelve-year-old girl, he brought her back to life. When a blind man approached Jesus, He restored his sight. When five thousand men plus woman and children were hungry, Jesus multiplied five loaves of bread and two fishes to feed the entire crowd. Jesus performed many miracles to set people free from their suffering.

But, Jesus wanted to permanently cure suffering. The only way to accomplish this was for Him, as a perfect, sinless, Son of God, to suffer and die in place of humanity.

This is why Jesus laid in agony beneath his tree. His purpose for coming to earth was to set mankind free from suffering, but in order to triumph, he knew he must face the ultimate pain. He knew he would be flogged with a whip, spat upon, deserted by his friends, nailed to a cross, and left to die in shame. He cried out to God, “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will but yours be done.” He begged God to take the cup of suffering from his lips, yet because it was the only way to secure salvation for mankind, Jesus took the cup and drank deeply. Why? Because of his compassion.

Jesus died on a cross so we could be free from sin. He was whipped so we could be free from sickness. Jesus could have avoided suffering, but instead he chose to suffer so that we might be free from suffering.

Buddha dwelt with suffering by trying to deny its existence. Jesus dwelt with suffering by embracing it. When Jesus saw human suffering, He was moved with compassion, and performed miracles to relieve the suffering.

When Buddha saw human suffering, he decided that suffering is caused by desire, and the only way to avoid suffering is to avoid desire. Jesus came, not to set us free from desire, but to fulfill all our desires. Jesus said, “I have come to give you life and life more abundantly.”

Jesus did not reveal four noble truths, Jesus only revealed Himself. Jesus said, “I am...the Truth...anyone who comes to the Father must go through me.”

Today, Jesus still confronts suffering with compassion. Anyone who calls on the name of Jesus will be set free from suffering and live eternally in heaven, a place better than nirvana. The Bible says, “the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

According to the Bible, in the Garden of Eden, there were two trees. The first was the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, and the second was the Tree of Life. The first tree represents human knowledge and human effort, and the second represents the God kind of life. Buddha sits beneath the first tree, he developed the greatest human system in history for dealing with pain. Jesus sits beneath the second tree, he simply offers eternal life to all who come to him.

The Father of Hugs and Kisses

On Father’s Day, I would like to remind you of our Heavenly Father. Here is a short excerpt from a book that Jessica is working on writing…

The picture that many people have of God is one of a judge. They imagine God as an old man with a long white beard sitting in heaven waiting for the opportunity to smite someone with a bolt of lightening for doing something wrong.

The people in Jesus’ time knew God as Holy, as a Judge, as the Almighty. Because of their religious ideas, they were scared of God. But then, Jesus revealed a new side of God that no one had ever seen before.

“Our Father, which art in heaven…” was how Jesus taught his disciples to pray. Do you know how revolutionary this phrase was?

Let’s look at the well-known story about the Prodigal Son. In this story, Jesus revealed a new facet of God’s character.

Once upon a time, there was a rich man who had two sons. The younger son went to his father and asked for his inheritance. This was unusual because usually a son would not receive his inheritance until after his father was dead. This son was basically saying, “Dad, I wish you were already dead.” In the Middle Eastern culture where honor is important, this story is immediately shocking. The listeners knew that the father would be justified in being extremely angry over such a deep insult.

But, the father was not offended. Instead he divided up his property and gave half of everything to the younger son as his inheritance.

Immediately the younger son packed his luggage and traveled to a far away country. He started to spend his money. Every night he would go out drinking and dancing. He bought drinks for everyone at the party. He wasted his money on gambling and drinking and wasteful living.

Suddenly, his money ran out. He had nothing. His friends left him.

He took the only job he could find, feeding pigs. He slept where the pigs slept. He ate the same garbage the pigs ate because he was starving. Any Jew listening to this story would have been horrified at such a terrible fate since Jews think pigs are unclean animals.

Suddenly the son had a good idea. He remembered that even the lowliest servants at his father’s home were eating and living much better than he was. He decided to go to his father and say, “Father, I have sinned against you. I am no longer worthy to be your son, to be in your family. I beg you, please allow me to be your servant and wash your clothes and clean your house.”

He started the long journey home. Slowly, he trudged through the dirt. He kept rehearsing in his mind, over and over again, the punishment his father would give him.

But, the father saw his son from afar off. What does this mean? The father was out looking for his son every day. He was eagerly waiting for him, longing for the day his youngest son would return. The moment the father saw his son coming from afar, he ran to him.

It is amazing that the father ran as fast as he could to meet his son. In that part of the world, an elderly man does not run, he walks in a slow and dignified manner. But, this love-struck father took the initiative to run towards his son.

The prodigal son fell at his father’s feet and began his preplanned speech to beg for mercy. The father totally ignored his son’s words, he lifted him to his feet, and began to hug him and kiss him.

The father calls his servants. “Bring my best Armani suit. Find my crocodile leather shoes. Bring my son’s favorite food. Put my Rolex on his wrist. Put a diamond ring on his finger.”

The father dressed his son in the finest clothes. Then he told the servants, “We are going to celebrate tonight. Let’s butcher our best calf. Bake some apple pie, that’s my son’s favorite. Hire some musicians, we are going to celebrate. Go invite all our friends to come.”

As the father continued to excitedly give instructions about the party, the one thing he could not stop doing was hugging and kissing his long lost son.

What was Jesus doing in this story? He was introducing God as the Father of hugs and kisses. No longer would God be a judge, now God is seen as a loving Father.

For Father’s Day, let’s remember what this story teaches us about our heavenly Father!

The Father’s Attitude
1. The Father sees the son from afar. No matter how far away from God we are, He still looks for us with merciful eyes.
2. The Father was moved with compassion. No matter what mistake you have made, God still loves you.
3. The Father came out to meet the Prodigal son. When we repent, God meets us where we are.
4. The Father hugged and kissed him. God welcomes us with open arms.
5. The Father put his best clothes on him. God takes our old dirty clothes and gives us robes of righteousness.
6. The Father put a ring on his finger. God restored the authority that has been lost.
7. The Father put shoes on his feet. God entrusts us to go preach the Gospel.
8. The Father restores his joy. Let us eat and be merry. The Christian life is full of joy.

What is your church doing to reach the lost?

As an evangelist, I have two roles. My first role is to tell people about Jesus, to preach the Gospel, to be a soul winner. But my second role as an evangelist is just as important.

In addition to evangelizing the lost, I am also called to equip believers for evangelism. According to Ephesians 4:11, the five-fold ministry gifts are given for “the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry.” In my blog today I want to give you an idea on how your local church members can be involved in reaching out to your community.

This past Saturday I participated in a local church outreach in Glenpool, OK with First Grace Church. The church is small, about one hundred members. Glenpool is a city of 12,000 people so the church feels it does not have the resources to do an outreach to the entire city, but they chose a particular neighborhood of about 150 home to focus on.

The church rented Jupiter Jumps and a popcorn machine, someone donated hotdogs, they invited a clown to make balloons, and they did face painting. They also did a drawing for a $300 pre-paid visa card in order to attract adults. The church members spread out into the community and invited people to come for a free hotdog. Of the 70 people who came around 25 people got saved! On Sunday morning, 8 people from the community came to church. At least two new families will start attending the church. For a church of this size, this was a very successful evangelistic outreach.

Every church should give their congregation opportunities to reach out to those who are lost. Not every member of your church is called to be an evangelist, but every member of your church can be involved in evangelism. By scheduling regular outreaches your church members can have an outlet for their ministry gifts. Whether they participate by cooking hotdogs, knocking on doors, playing music, or just hugging people, every person in the church, from the young to the old, can help win the lost to Christ.

Turn Your Swords into Plowshares

How are you using your words? Are you using your words to attack people or to build God’s kingdom. Words are important because they can be used for either good or for harm.

I am harvest focused. My passion is for souls. But recently, I was attacked on the blog of a self-appointed church watchdog. With his words, the blogger assailed me. He tore my ministry down. He questioned my integrity, my motives, my theology. The worst part of the assault was his misuse of Scripture to beat me up.

He used his words and God’s word as a sharp sword to cut me to pieces. After I finished reading his four thousand-word diatribe, I felt like a flayed fish, cut to pieces and laid out on a sizzling frying pan to cook. I am a big boy, I can handle the criticism, but my story illustrates an important point.

All too often, some people in the church use their words to cut others down, to attack, to injure, to hurt, to curse their brothers and sisters. In a misguided passion for truth, they even use God’s Word as a dangerous weapon to put down other believers.

The Word of God is like a sword. But it is designed to be used to attack Satan, not your brothers. Christians need to stop stabbing other Christians in the back and use their weapon for its proper purpose.

In the Garden of Gethsemane, Peter took out his sword and cut off the ear of Malchus, the servant of the high priest. Jesus bent down into the dirt, picked the ear up, and miraculously reattached it. All too often, preachers have wounded and maimed people with their insensitive, sword-wielding way of preaching of the word of God. When preachers use their words as swords, they metaphorically cut off the ears of the people they are attacking. With their spiritual ears cut off, these people become unable to hear what the Spirit is saying.

This is what happened to the religious leaders in Jerusalem. Right before he was stoned, Stephen accused them of being stubborn and uncircumcised in both heart and ears (Acts 7:51). The Pharisees and Sadducees had so much political infighting that their spiritual ears were deafened and they failed to recognize the Messiah they were waiting for.

While churches are busy attacking other churches and denominations, there is a world full of people who are going to hell. Dying humanity is crying out for help. Will the church hear their plea?

The prophet Micah prophesized that in the last days nations would beat their swords into plowshares (Micah 4:3). What was once used for war would be turned into a tool for bringing in the harvest. It is time to beat our swords into plowshares. Rather then using God’s word as a weapon for attacking others, we should use our words to encourage others to go after the harvest.

Jesus is coming soon. We need to make every second count for God. I believe the greatest harvest of souls in history will happen in the next few years. More people will be saved in the next decade then were saved in the first two thousand years of church history.

But, in order for this great harvest of souls to take place, we must stop using our words to attack each other. Instead, we must use our words to encourage one another to go after the harvest. Our words can be used either as a weapon of war or as a tool for bringing in a harvest of souls.
